COUCH INVADERS

Posted by BigRussell |

You just found the steal of a century at the antique show, in the attic, at a swap meet, or maybe even something your favorite great aunt willed to you. A beautiful old piece of furniture that with a little love and care will surely enchant any room it graces. You can’t believe your luck, the material is in relatively good condition, even if it is not, you think you may even get away with making a tailored fit throw cover for it. Well you may want to think about it again! Though your piece may be an antiquity, have value and the condition of the fabric, foam, and batting is show able, these factors may not necessarily be your only reason to consider re upholstering your chosen treasure. Let’s take a closer look!

It is a foreign world on a microscopic scale and out of immediate eye site could well lurk a whole host of life forms. Alien in appearance, predatory in nature and like any good hunter they can be found where both their food is plentiful and the safety of cover is nearby . These elements not only ensure their survival, it allows them to thrive as well. You my dear are the hunted, and your bed, couch, rugs, and curtains are the safe refuge for these microscopic predators. Not only to hide out, but to nurse their offspring as well. You may have inherited a real headache hidden in the beauty of the antiquity you cherish.

Dust Mites....

Imagine a hungry army has invaded your cushions by the millions. They have arrived to harvest your dead skin cells and hair. Their arrival brings a whole rash of complications to you and your family, (especially the vulnerable) inducing symptoms of asthma and allergic reactions. The situation is further complicated in fall and winter months when we close up our homes from the cold. In essence we are nurturing our unwanted friends with an environment they thrive in. However it is not them that we are allergic to, rather it is their feces!

According to Environment, Health and Safety Online, "a single dust mite produces about 20 waste droppings each day, each containing a protein to which many people are allergic. Yuck! The proteins in that combination of feces and shed skin are what cause allergic reactions in humans. Depending on the person and exposure, reactions can range from itchy eyes to asthma attacks. And finally, unlike other types of mites, house dust mites are not parasites, since they only eat dead tissue. Gross, but true..."

You can fight back by keeping the dust down in your home with regular washing of fabrics in HOT water (130 degrees F{60c}) weekly. Warm water and cold water does not kill mites, however freezing temperatures and sunlight does! Use synthetic fabrics, mites do not seem to like them as much.

Though these are practical applications for bedding and curtains, they are not so practical for old furniture where over time the batting and foam may have accumulated a bountiful harvest of nurturing for these unwanted pests. Here is where you might want to start fresh and replace all the fibers from the batting to the covering. Which is still a cost effective means of wind up with a new fresh look and feel for your treasure.

Bed Bugs...

Remember the old saying, "don’t let the bed bugs bite!" You will certainly know when they do. In the simplest terms, this parasite operates with the same methodology as the mosquito. It hunts by thermographic heat detection and carbon dioxide detection and it feasts on blood. It will insert two hollow tubes into the victim, one to deliver an anticoagulant and anesthetic and the other to draw blood, often leaving a welt behind, and are often accompanied by very intense itching. The red bump or welts are the result of an allergic reaction to the anesthetic contained in the bedbug's saliva, which is inserted into the blood of its victim.

Although rare there are some very serious consequences that can result from co-habitating with bed bugs. Wikipedia outlines two: " Anaphylactoid reactions produced by the injection of serum and other nonspecific proteins are observed and there is the possibility that the saliva of the bedbugs may cause anaphylactic shock in a small percentage of people. It is also possible that sustained feeding by bedbugs may lead to anemia.

Bed bugs can live in any area of the home and can reside in tiny cracks in furniture as well as on textiles and upholstered furniture. Replacement of the materials are the best bet and all out fumigation of the home may be required. Best get a hold of your phone book and locate your local pest control authority for advice. Yet again there is no need to entirely destroy an antiquity or sentimental treasure. You can have all the fabrics, (foams, batting and covering) removed and be bound tightly in a plastic bag to be discarded. All cracks in the furniture as well as areas they can hide in the wood frame should be scraped out with a wire brush to dislodge and destroy any eggs that may be present.

Now there is no need to panic or do anything rash like destroy something sentimental or beautifully crafted from days of old. No! It just requires a little more tender loving care and a good strategy! Re upholstering the piece is your best plan of attack, whether you do it or have it done for you! It is still more cost effective than having to purchase new, and far more effective than a slip cover, which in essence is only a band aid cure.... a cover up of the issue so to say.

To Plywood...Or Not To Plywood!

Posted by BigRussell |

We have all experienced it .. sinking into that sagging couch that seemingly pulls you into the pits of it’s bowels; threatening to never let you go. As we struggle to get back out there is that ever pressing question we can no longer ignore, "is it time to buy a new one?" Yet there may be may reasons we will search for a means of fixing the problem as opposed to replacing our beloved piece of furniture. It may be for the sake of nostalgia, finance, or the piece is an antiquity that is irreplaceable. As an old familiar saying goes, "there is no need to throw out the baby with the bath water" and in this case there is no reason to throw out the couch over a simple spring issue.

However hitting the streets and asking advice for a quick fix can yield some very interesting solutions. Surprisingly at the top of the list is the suggestion to use a plywood sheet over the springs. Although the sagging issue is quickly resolved it will be at the cost of comfort, not to mention the cost of purchasing and cutting the plywood sheet to fit suitably for it’s application. It sounds a bit like an over-kill, and surely there has to be a better answer.

Another suggestion is to apply hay-wire to bind the broken spring together and while this is a quick fix that will provide some degree of success, it is certainly no long term solution. The hay-wire is substantially less strong than the spring itself and in time it will give way and break as well. In addition, it is very difficult to bind the springs together tight enough to replicate the firmness the working spring once had. There will still be some degree of sagging, however not as pronounced.

Ideally the entire replacement of the spring will be the best bet. It will not only be cost effective, it will restore the original firmness and comfort of your piece of furniture as well. It is not a difficult fix either, what is difficult is finding the supplies. Now we are not talking you regular "coil spring,." this is a specialized "conical spring," something you just cant get in the hardware stores. If you are looking to do it yourself you might want to locate a re-upholsterer and order your springs through them, or contact diyupholsterysupply.com. Conical springs are sold by the foot and are relatively inexpensive. There are accessories you will need to get along with the spring like clips that go on the end of it so don’t forget to add those to your order.

If you choose to have your piece restored professionally make sure you seek out a re-upholster whose practice is to tend to the springs as part of the service. Ensure they will replace the bent or stretched springs. In doing so this will not only restore the look of the piece, but it’s functionality as well. This will extend the life and enjoyment of your furniture and provide great utility for your investment, which chances are, will still cost less buying brand new.

Kids Are To Silk As Bulls Are To China Shops!

You are considering recovering your favorite chaise lounge and -well- you may as well toss in the living room ottoman also as long as the staple gun is out.... but you wonder; “could it be possible to save little and recover both in the same fabric? What are the rules to purchasing the appropriate textile in a re upholstery situation?

There are no real hard set rules to textile applications. Consider it to be more of an art form, where the flavor of textures and colors are up to the fancies of the decorating artist. There are however some considerations relating to practicality which you might want to look at. Budget is always going to be part of the mix, however the style of the piece, it’s level of use, the placement, and the intended users are all important factors to take into account as well.

Some fabrics wear better than others, others fade quickly if placed in direct sunlight. Natural fibers tend to be more expensive than synthetic fibers; and though the fashion police will not come and bust down your door for wrapping a Victorian dining set in vinyl, it will certainly raise an eyebrow and a scowl from your visitors. Even if the set is a replica! Indeed there are certain fabrics which suit intended purposes, so let’s take a quick look at them.

Making a Statement Of Elegance...
There is nothing that says sheer elegance than silk. It is a very cool fresh and delicate fabric. Costly, yet usually adorning exquisite pieces of furniture not designed for regular use. You can find silk fabrics adorning choice pieces suitable for formal applications. A show piece settee, or a formal dining set as example. The use of silk in these applications make a clear statement of clean classic finesse. Yet the statement comes at a cost and not necessarily financial. Silk is a very unforgiving fabric. It wears quickly , wrinkles easily and requires professional cleaning to avoid shrinkage.

Linen is another textile you might consider for your show piece of furniture. A natural fiber as silk, yet not quite as expensive. It has the same temperamental tendencies as silk, however it is better at resisting fading and piling.

Synthetic alternatives offer a little in the way of more durability than the counterparts they are simulating. Acetate and rayon for example were developed to imitate silk with a less expensive price tag. It offers resistance to mildew, piling and shrinkage. Though somewhat stronger than silk, still ti’s applications are more suited adult formal rooms.

Rugged Yes!... But Elegant Too!
Wanting that taste of luxury and flare but don’t want to compromise on durability? Well it is going to cost you, but the fabric will last providing rich returns for your investment. Leather has always stood the test of time regarding both elements. Leather is well known for it’s durability, as well as being easy to clean and maintain. Almost as if having your cake and eating it too! Leather offers a few very unique qualities as well: it comes in a variety of textures and colors; and this is the only fabric that seems to take on it’s own personality when it wears. You can say it develops character over time.

There are two synthetic alternatives that were designed to mimic leather. One is very popular and has been around for quite a few years. Also presented in a variety of colors and textures is vinyl. Kid friendly, pet friendly, dirt friendly even; this is a very forgiving fabric. It does however compromise on the elegant scale, but makes up considerably by being a blessing to the budget as well as versatility of use.

The new kid on the block is micro fibre. It offers a velvety suede like texture. Far less expensive than leather, and a bit more upscale than vinyl, this textile settled comfortably as a compromise between the two. It is made from an ultra fine polyester making it durable, relatively easy to clean and very pleasant to the touch.

Comfortable Beautiful and Versatile- Just Like Your Family...
Cotton and cotton blends are as warm and welcome in the family room as hot chocolate is on a cold winter day. Depending on the thread count (the higher the better) and the type of weave used, this fibre lends itself to good wear and tear. On it’s own cotton has a tendency to wrinkle, soil and stretch easily; but if blended with other fibers or given a surface treatment these weaknesses can easily be compensated for. Cotton blends are not only very sturdy, pet and child friendly, but most often found in high traffic well used cozy spaces. Because it is the most often applied textile destined for everyday use, it is a good idea to apply a stain resistant finish to it to better protect it.

Wool is another excellent family oriented, high traffic fabric . It is sturdy, standing strong against piling, wrinkling, soiling and fading. Wool also comes blended with synthetic fibers most likely acrylic, making spot cleaning a breeze! Acrylic is another synthetic fiber in the marketplace, developed to imitate wool. It resists wear, wrinkling, soiling and fading..

There are many more fabrics and fabric blends in the marketplace, these is just a few to get you started in thinking about your considerations and the variety of options available to suit your style, budget and requirements. Among these categories come a vast array of colors, textures, and patterns to make any artist thrilled. So splash some style into your home and have no fear to re upholster your favorite comfy piece of furniture. There is bound to be a suitable fabric that can breathe life and style back into your furniture in a very cost effective manner.

Picking The Fabric That Suits Your Lifestyle

Upholstery Fabrics ... Which Suits You Best?

Your refurbished piece of furniture will become your adorning crown jewel in it’s room. That is why it is important to choose the perfect fabric for the job, not only because is it the most visible portion of furniture, but it needs to be user friendly as well in terms of comfort. Needless to say there are some considerations you will have to take into account before you can make a decision on the type of fabric you will use. Today fabric choices include cloth, leather, and many new high-tech synthetics. The style of furniture you are working with, where it will be placed and your budget are a few of the things that will all come into play in making a final decision. Here are some considerations you need to look at:

Color...

If your re upholstered piece is going to be in a high traffic area and used often, you might want to consider not only a fabric that lends well to durability and stain resistance, but also a color that won’t show dirt easily. If your piece is going to be placed in a sunlight area, you will have to consider the possibility of fading. Finally ask how well the colors in the swatch you are interested in will hold up to spot washing as well, and if there are any manufacturers recommendations regarding the cleaning of the fabric.

Durability...
Pieces that are subject to daily heavy wear need to be covered in durable, tightly woven fabrics. Preferably with their pattern woven in as opposed to printed on as these will wear much better. Though vinyl is excellent for a kitchen a chair because it is very durable and washable, it is questionable whether you want to wrap an antique dining set in vinyl. Clearly there is a compromise between functionality and style. You will need to find that perfect balance that best suits all members of the family young, old, and four legged alike.

Thread count...
Thread count is a measurement given to fabric. It refers to the number f threads per square inch. The higher the thread count the more tightly woven the fabric is, and the better t will wear. And in most cases the more expensive as well. there is a trade off between durability and frugality. Within that continuum you will find your perfect fit.

It’s complexity....
How easy is the fabric to work with? Is it stiff or supple? Does it lend to easily being wrinkled or marked? Is it going to round corners without unwanted tucks and dimple?. Are there checkers or lines that will have to be aligned or matched? If these considerations are not taken into account your newly re upholstered piece can become a tragic disaster if you plan to do it your self.

It always helps to bend an ear of someone who has worked with fabrics, especially upholstery fabrics. Search these people out and chat with them. They have years of valuable experience that can save you a considerable headache when facing the multitude of choices the fabric industry presents. In addition to a few how-to secrets only an experienced re upholsterer can know. You will be glad you did! Most important, be sure to pick a fabric that you can truly LIVE with. And, if you grow tired of it in a few years, remember that virtually all upholstery can be re-covered!

CONQUERING THE STAINS AND SAVING THE FURNITURE

Posted by BigRussell |

It is always an exciting moment when we place our new or newly re upholstered treasured piece of furniture in it’s rightful place. Indeed there is considerable truth to the old adage, "a change is often as good as a rest."

A new or revitalized piece can refresh and delight any space it adorns, and bring much pleasure to it’s household. Until the unspeakable happens. An accident of epic proportion: grape juice, candle wax, or ink is splattered on the prized treasure. These accidents are be notorious for occurring at their worst possible moments as well... like when you find yourself without a commercial solution.

We all know that to effectively deal with a stain on rugs or upholstery, you have to act fast. Often enough finding yourself not well equipped for the task at hand....or so you think! Well think again! Let us look at some effective and powerful home remedies concocted from simple supplies that I am sure you have on hand right now. Check your pantry or cupboards and see if you have any of the following:

  • baking soda

  • borax

  • white vinegar

  • salt

  • lime

  • mayonnaise

  • toothpaste

  • egg yoke

  • milk

  • rubbing alcohol

  • salad oil

  • Windex

This unusual list is going to be all you need in any spill emergency , and a large majority of them you will already have on hand. What is the added bonus is that these are earth friendly applications as well. With these you will be able to effectively restore any fibre to its original form without damage to the colors.

An all purpose cleanser made of 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of white vinegar and warm water will provide grease cutting, mildly abrasive cleaning action that deodorizes and softens hard water as well. This is a good solution for mopping up a large spill as it will effectively handle the majority of the stain, as well as eliminate water stains on wood. You can also use straight borax instead of baking soda and white vinegar. This makes a very effective and color safe solution that provides added disinfecting power. If the stain persists, do not dismay, there are more things in your arsenal you can use.

Another effective means of dealing with water stains on the wooden surfaces of your treasured piece, is with either toothpaste or mayonnaise applied to a damp cloth. Any brand will do. Just buff the surface after application and you are good to go.

A rust stain can be easily dealt with salt. Sprinkle it directly to the stain and squeeze a lime over top of it until the salt is well soaked. Leave the mixture on for about three minutes and then wipe clean with a moist cloth or sponge. If you don’t have a lime, vinegar will also work. Salt also works very well on dark colored juice or wine stains. Again sprinkle the salt on the area and rub with a cloth moistened in cold water.

Another equally effective remedy for dark stubborn stains, like coffee; is to mix an egg yoke and a tablespoon of milk and water. Rub this mixture on the stain. If the stain had set or is stubborn then a stronger mixture is needed; just add a little rubbing alcohol and continue working on the stain. Then rinse with a moistened cloth. Rubbing Alcohol is effective for spilled candle wax on fabrics as well as tar on wools. Clean off the excess spillage and rub the area with the alcohol, and the wax will dissolve. Tar on cotton can be dealt with salad oil. After you scrape off the excess dab the stain with salad oil and let is set for 24 hours and then rub with a warm soapy wet cloth.

Oil paint on fabrics is enough to stop your heart, but it can be dealt with windex if you have it on hand, or even ammonia. Unlike turpentine it is color safe and more likely to be in your cupboard. Spray the area with index and initially dab the area as not to spread the damage. When the excess of oil paint is off, then rub the area. Repeat as necessary, and then wipe the area with a dampened cloth .

With some fast acting and easily accessible products, which chances are you already have on hand; an accident regardless of it’s nature need not destroy your investment in a new or newly refurbished piece of furniture. Ensuring it’s enjoyment worry free for a long time to come. As Featured on ArticleCity.com

COLOR CONSIDERATIONS FOR UPHOLSTERY AND ROOM DESIGN

Posted by BigRussell |

Imagine a world without color! Color delivers an emotional ambience into our worlds like nothing else and though it seems that basic survival needs are not necessarily dependant on color we do hear of seasonal affective disorder -- an illness deemed to be due to the lack of light. Darkness holds little to no color. For within the lights rays colors are displayed and our innermost emotions are stimulated

Colors do affect our psyche... that has been determined and color can set the tone as if it were spoken in a whisper. Very subtle yet very clear. Not heard with the ears, but seen with the eyes and felt with the heart. It is not surprising then that color plays a very important and intricate role in interior decorating. Your furniture, your drapes, your walls will speak a mood and tone to everyone who sets eyes on them. It is important therefore to take a moment to think about the message you wish to deliver.

As every room of your home and workspace serves it’s own special function, every color in these spaces should also match these prescribed functions. It would not serve well to set a somber mood in a child's playroom, or splash vibrant enthusiasm and energy in a formal board room. The aesthetics have to match the theme and intended use of the room design or the audience will feel uncomfortable. Much research has gone into what is now refereed to as the psychology of color. Let’s take a quick look at what they have learned.

Red...
This is the color of primal energy, it is dramatic and intense. Symbolic for passion, strength , motivation and physical drive. It is a color that can rouse us to activity and fill us with energy to get things done. It is the pioneering spirit, the revolutionist, and the extrovert. It is a color that alerts , excites and motivates. Positive red can give us feelings of warmth, friendship and excitement. Red is empowering in meeting rooms, speakers tend to be fiery. It is often used in bars to create a cozy environment, and to encourage people to talk. It increases body temperature and stimulates blood circulation. However too much red can leave a person feeling drained and constantly tired, and create an aggressive angry impulse.

Orange and Yellow...
These are uplifting colors, stimulating and enlivening. Orange is the color most closely associated with joy and excitement. It sparks movement , creativity, dance and self expression. It promotes a sociable sporty, and good natured demeanor. It is warming, enchanting and captivating. While yellow is more connected with ego and in some instances fosters a feeling of detachment. Being warm and optimistic, yellow is closely associated with the sun. It is the color of detachment and is related to control. It stimulates our intellect and logical mind as well as helping with the digestive process. Too much yellow however results in excessive mental stimulation, ego, detachment and argument.

Although orange and yellow radiate distinctly different energies, both are warm and optimistic colors with the ability to clear our minds, brighten our moods and raise our spirits. It encourages creativity, excitement vibrancy and humor. However too much exposure to orange will create emotions of fear, uneasiness, and shyness, as well as irresponsibility.

Green...
Green is the color mostly associated with balance, harmony, nature, and healing. Especially when the healing is heart related. In the middle of the visible spectrum, it is considered neither hot or cold. It is honest, stable and reliable. It is the color of kindness, compassion, caring, and sharing. Green is viewed as comforting to the soul as well as stress relieving. Green is not conducive to argument or conflict. It reminds us of the healing that can come from nature, connecting us to the unconditional, nurturing and constant support we receive from our world. When life gets out of hand, the green of the grass, plants, and trees are there to soothe us.

Too much green can over stimulate the emotions, causing one to be overcautious, and overly sensitive. On the negative side, green is associated with envy or a desire unfulfilled..."the green eyed monster"... this is a term used when the heart is not balanced; add a little red as a grounding to subdue "the green eyed monster." Too much of any one color will create an imbalance of energy with detrimental consequences. Perhaps that is why our world is not grey scale.

Turquoise and Aquamarine
This mixture of green and blue holds a youthful, vibrant, and invigorating characteristics. It is the color of pure fresh glacial water, it is the color of cool.. Turquoise induces clarity and the flow of communication. It soothes away tension, and can help when we feel vulnerable and nervous. It calms the mind and helps to promote clarity of thought. Too much however will foster feelings of insecurity, isolation, and confusion.

Blue...
This is the color of calm. It cools, pacifies, comforts and helps unwind down our day. Blue induces us to take am more leisurely pace. It has been documented to slow down the heart beat, blood pressure and breathing. Blue is also the color for communication, imagination, as well as inner strength. Bringing to you quiet, peace and serenity. It is also a color that has qualities that provide healing of pain: such as burns and pre-menstrual conditions. We absorb colors in many ways, through our eyes, in the food we eat, and through our shin. Too much absorption of blue in any environment could induce laziness, depression, apathy detachment and introversion.

Purple...
The color of meditation! Purple helps to develop insight and perception. It can center, and help you feel more balanced and in touch with yourself and the world around you. It is a lofty color, often used by kings and successful people, perhaps because of it’s associations with impact and intensity. It is considered to be a very influencing color. Purple unites two extremes of the color spectrum: energetic red, and calming blue; and is said to elevate or heighten your five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and and smell.

Too much purple will however induce a low sense of self worth and inferiority. It will leave you feeling detached from the world, as well as develop a tendency to feel distracted and dreamy.

Pink...
The color most associated with love and romance. It is gentle, soft, and soothing. It is the nurturing color of tenderness and compassion. A color of unconditional and spiritual love, yet too much of it can lead to excessive daydreaming and arrogance. Pinks can reinforce positive and reassuring protective influences. It can help steady overactive behavior, as well as have the ability to induce the desire for change.

Brown...
This is the most grounded of all colors. Because of it’s down to earth feel it allows us to feel rooted and connected, thus supplying us with a constant force of energy and inspiration. The color of commitment and security. Brown is strong, sound, silent and reliable. An excess of brown however can hold you back from change and progress.

Grey...
Quiet and laid back, it is often used to support and assist hues from other parts of the spectrum. Framing and encasing some, while subduing and toning down others. A world without the quiet shades of grey lack structure, dimension, sustenance and support. it is why we shadow 3D objects in are with grey tones.

Though all colors can benefit from the presence of grey, if grey is allowed to dominate it will make you feel uncommitted as well as leading to feelings of fear and negativity.

You can heal, motivate, and subdue your environment with splashes of color as you can see. One thing is for sure, as anything else in life a healthy dose of balance and blending goes a long way to a healthy and happy mind body and soul. Too much of anything is never a good idea regardless of how much you like it. Color is no exception. With a little forethought in what you want to set as a tone for your re-decoration efforts, you will be able to create any environment imaginable with great success. Whether it be a splash of paint or to breathe new life into your favorite treasured furniture by reupholstering them, careful color considerations before hand will make or break your efforts to re-vitalize your life.

HOW TO USE FABRIC TO DECORATE YOUR HOME

Posted by BigRussell |

WRITTEN BY GUEST AUTHOR ELMER ANTHONY OLAER

A common design dilemma is how to change the look of an entire room without blowing the budget. Major changes in furniture, structural renovations to the home and any other major works are out of the question. However, if there's one thing that professional designers agree on, it's the capacity of fabric in various textures and colors to bring life to a room. Fabric, when incorporated properly, can define the theme for the season or the mood of the room, and can bring life to even the dullest spaces.

Depending on its use, fabrics can bring unique moods to a room. Heavy, rich-colored and textured fabrics usually bring a more formal, ornate feel to a room, while sheer fabrics used in windows, made to hang over bare walls, or even just thrown over the back of a couch or an ottoman bring a fun, flirty feel to a room.

The following are some fabulous ideas to incorporate fabric in different places in the home

Window Treatments

A window positioned anywhere in a room provides a dramatic statement, a focal point, or may even provide an opportunity to bring the outdoors inside the room. With window treatments, fabrics may be used in curtains and window valances.
In order to provide a dramatic statement in a room via the window treatment, you can make use of two extreme types of fabrics, either heavy, rich-colored fabrics, or sheer draperies: or possibly a combination of both. Heavy, rich-colored fabrics make a dramatic statement with their strong colors and eye-catching patterns (like damasks, flower prints, stripes, etc.). Sheer draperies, on the other hand, bring a light, sunny feeling to the room by letting in just enough sunlight, yet allowing for a light and flirty curtain solution.

Used together, putting sheers behind the heavy fabric draperies, provides texture and color contrast. The heavy fabric draperies may be opened in the morning with the use of trimmings and tassels, allowing for sunlight to come through the sheer draperies. To create a more formal feeling, some of the heavy fabric draperies may be incorporated into a window valance.

The Sitting Area

In rooms like the living room and the dining area, the sitting area comprises much of the space. This means that most of the design that can be incorporated into the room must come from the sitting area, if it is to make a visual impact.

For the living room, fabrics are the best solutions to provide either temporary or permanent overhauls for the sofa or couch. Sofas that are badly stained or worn may be taken to a shop for re-upholstery. When re-upholstering the furniture, the extent of damage equates to the amount of repair that the sofa will undergo some may only need a small amount of repair while others need major repair: such as the foam completely changed or complete over-haul. Re-upholstery entails the permanent change of the outer skin or covering of the sofa using new fabric or a covering material such as faux leather. When choosing the fabric for re-upholstering, choose one that will blend in with various color schemes, as re-upholstery is permanent in nature.

For temporary punches of life, color, or even design themes, slipcovers are the better choice. Slipcovers are available ready-made in department stores, or you may have them custom-made especially for your sofa to assure a snug-fit. Slipcovers will allow for seasonal color changes of the room, and even for mixing and matching the sofa with other furniture or accessories to better suit the decor of the room.

For the dining area, the dining chairs or stools may be fitted with covers and skirts for a more decorative effect or to better continue a color scheme in the room.

Tables Around the House

Fabric table covers serve two important purposes: they bring colors, patterns, and excitement to a room's design, and protect the table from water or other corrosive materials that come in contact with it. When using fabrics on tables, you may experiment with various lengths - using long fabrics to cover the entire table for a formal effect, shorter fabric to fit the table top exactly to allow for storage under the table, or as a long, thin, table runner to bring drama to a table and emphasis to the table decor.

Fabric is used in these various scenarios is, primarily, to bring color or color themes into the room. The use of fabrics by themselves or in color and pattern combinations allows you to mix and match as you wish. The same colors used over and over again in a room poses no threat when working with fabric, because with fabric, you may use the same color in various shades, patterns, and fabric textures to avoid monotony.

Used properly, fabrics achieve design changes at a cheaper price and with less effort. Fabrics take the place of added accessories and furniture, create as much impact as a new coat of paint or wallpaper, and allow for versatility of design by mixing and matching, and temporary solutions such as slipcovers at a fraction of the cost of permanent changes.
